Raw Feeding Week Day 5: Mixing It Up

Raw Feeding Week Day 5: Mixing It Up

Raw feeding is the best diet for the majority of dogs but only if done properly. You don't need a degree in nutrition or complicated spreadsheets in order to feed raw correctly. What you do need is variety.

Variety is key

The most important thing in feeding a raw diet is feeding a mixture of proteins and additions (e.g. veg, fruit, seeds and nuts).

Dogs, like humans, require a balanced diet to thrive. Different proteins provide varying levels of essential nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. By offering a variety of proteins in their diet, we can ensure that our dogs are receiving a wide range of nutrients to support their overall health.

Feeding a single protein source to your dog can lead to nutritional deficiencies over time. Each protein source has its own unique nutritional profile, so relying solely on one type of meat may result in your dog missing out on key nutrients that are only found in other types of proteins. By rotating between different proteins, you can help prevent any potential deficiencies from arising.

Include at least 5 different proteins in your dog's diet and a range of vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts.

This isn't optional, this is crucial for the overall health and well-being of your dog.

Allergies and Sensitivities

Dogs can develop allergies or sensitivities to certain foods. By feeding a mixture of proteins, you can reduce the likelihood of your dog developing an intolerance to a specific protein source.

Mixing Brands

Don't just vary the proteins, vary the brand.  Different brands use different cuts of meat. Again, this variety will help ensure you meet all your dog's nutritional needs. As discussed in Day 4's blog post, you need to feed as much of the animal as possible.

Different brands will have different textures and different tastes. The more brands you can introduce into the diet, the less likely you are to create a fussy dog.

Palatability and Variety
Feeding the same protein day in and day out can become boring for your dog. By offering a mixture of proteins, you can keep mealtime exciting and enjoyable for your furry friend. Dogs, like us, appreciate variety in their diet.

A varied raw diet can provide many benefits for dogs, including improved digestion, increased energy, and a healthier coat. By providing a variety of nutrients, you can also help prevent nutrient deficiencies and potential health issues. Additionally, a varied diet can prevent dogs from becoming picky eaters, as they will be exposed to different flavors and textures.

Tomorrow, Day 6, we discuss the topic all raw feeders love: poo!
